ABOUT THE ISLAND
Kelaa (Dhivehi: ކެލާ) is one of the islands which is famous for its unique and breathtaking white sandy beaches in the Maldives. Moreover, its spectacular lagoon and the underwater beautify is phenomenal. Kelaa is geographically located at Thiladhummathi Atoll in the north of the Maldives. Covering an area of about 2sq. Km, Kelaa is 3km in length and 1.04km at its widest point. A large part of Kelaa consists of mangrove swamps, and it is also a biosphere reserve.

HOW TO REACH
A distance of about 300Kms from Malé might seem like a laborious journey to get to Kelaa, but this distance is just a number. An efficient and convenient mode to reach Kelaa is by combining air and boat travel. A 45-minute direct flight from Velana International Airport takes you to Hanimaadhoo Airport. These flights run daily. From here, speedboats to Kelaa jetty take 30 minutes.
THINGS TO DO
If you need to explore the island, its always to rent a motor bike or use a bicycle. The island has one of the largest mangrove areas in the Maldives. Bruguiera hainesii is one of the two critically endangered mangrove species listed in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species have been found recently.
Few number of watersport activities such as jet-skiing, sea kayak at the beautiful lagool, night fishing and more. The best way to explore the breathtaking underwater is snorkeling and scuba diving. It would be a incredible memory if you are able to witness manta rays and whale sharks.
Islands nearby, including Baarah, and Utheemu will definitely bring historical heritage as it has the old palace of the Maldivian hero (Mohamad Thakurufaanu), who fought and brought independence to the Maldives. Hence, island hopping to nearby islands is a must.
